But with miracles come hardships, and Baker’s 40 days in the desert have turned into winning the World Series. He is the first manager in MLB history to lead five separate teams to the playoffs, although his only other World Series squad, the Giants of 2002, was defeated in seven games by the Angels. When he was originally chosen Giants manager in 1993, he said that his objective as a manager was to reach the Hall of Fame since his playing career, although remarkable, was not of Hall of Fame standard. After 28 years, 24 managerial seasons, and 1,983 victories, the only thing missing from his résumé is a World Series victory.

“I’m not disappointed in the least,” he said. “You know, I’d be sad if I had to wait till I was 20, you know?”
His last World Series defeat was followed by the loss of his job, so he’s been through that as well. Will he be given another opportunity to put the disappointment behind him?
